After being in a digital queue for over a month my iPhone 5 finally arrived. One of my favorite Apps, one I highly suggest you get if you are on i-devices, is Vocabology. It gathers all the “Word of the day” words from
from sites such as Merriam-Webster, Dictionary, Wordsmith, Yahoo Education, and complies them into a neat list that updates itself every day. Example sentences are included – of course – which makes it a neat app for easily expanding your vocabulary on-the-go. It is one of my “must haves” on the phone. I have scoured the App store for other gems like this to no avail. There are many Apps for writers but most of them seem, well, not that good. I don’t need writing prompts (the one on WordPress is enough for posts here), I don’t need help structuring my novel and coming up with new plot twists and story elements, and I don’t need quizzes about my characters. I’m past that stage. It all comes to me in my head.
Many writing sites are the same. They offer tonnes of advice and wordy articles on how to plan your writing, structure it, create good characters, etc, but that’s not what I want. Ideally I would like an App that gathers a few Creative Writing examples each day with a “pre-edit” sentence, commentary, and a “post-edit” sentence, so I can see how people think when editing, what they believe is the correct way to write in given situations, and how one can keep the length of writing to a minimum. Unfortunately I have not seen such an App. Have you? Do you know of any other good writing Apps? What are the “must have” Apps for you (this includes non-writing)?
